Why you shouldn’t say CHEESE!

©Created Portraits - Chester Virginia Portrait Photographer

Someone whips out their cell phone and points the camera at you. Is your first reaction to put your hand on your hip, look at the camera and say CHEESE!

If so, I have some suggestions for you that will improve those pics.

Which of these images do you think is more impactful?

The point here is to get a little creative. What’s the story behind this picture? What are you trying to say?

Look around you. Is there something in the foreground you can include? How about a prop, such as a hat, or pearls or …

Also, look behind you. What else will be in the shot. Do you really want people to see you in front of that?

And lastly, strike a pose. Hands on hips is okay but is there another pose that fits here? Sometimes less is more as in these examples. You don’t always need a full length image. Having the person taking the picture zoom in (with their feet if need be) can create a dramatic and impactful picture that otherwise would have been just another snapshot.
